Emerging requirements for detailed spatial databases to support a
variety of Department of Defense (DoD) activities may require
substantial investment in basic research to advance the
state-of-the-art in automated cartographic database construction and
maintenance. This paper provides a technical rationale for pursuing a
new initiative focused on the application of image understanding
technology to automated cartography in support of programs for
simulation and training, mission planning, autonomous navigation, and
the analysis of intelligence imagery.
